GRAPES
Vineyards have for centuries represented a traditional and inseparable component in the Sicilian scene. Owing to ideal pedoclimatic characteristics the fruit is guaranteed from June to December. Table grape cultivation in the Mazzarrone area has its roots in the last century. During the years, following technical innovations and varietal developments, the table grapes of Mazzarrone have always assumed greater importance to the point of becoming renowned for their high quality value.

Characteristics
Besides their attractive aspect, these grape bunches are also particularly resistant: the Grapes of Mazzarrone could actually be preserved for more than a month in a very low temperature ambient with a high level of humidity, producing bunches with black, red or white grapes weighing between 3 and 5 grams each.
The grape bunch is an infructescence consisting of a central wooden part (stalk), a few roundish or oval grapes and of a skin, containing pigments determining the colour of the fruit. Grapes have several beneficial properties for the organism: it acts as a disinfectant and an antivirus, is diuretic and laxative, activates liver functions, eases digestion, contributes towards reducing the level of blood cholesterol. Some varieties are a discreet source of vitamin C.

Consumption
In cooking, it is eaten fresh but also comes in as an ingredient in the preparation of sweets, marmalades, jellies, sorbets and juices. In cosmetics its juice can soften and clear the skin.

Production area
The geographical area of interest for the cultivation of the table grapes of Mazzarrone is located astride the provinces of Catania and of Ragusa and includes the municipalities of Caltagirone, Licodia Eubea, and Mazzarrone in Catania province, and the municipalities of Acate, Chiaramonte Gulfi and Comiso in Ragusa province
